Bumper crop of publications in December 2021

Great to see a raft of new publications in the run-up to Christmas!

With the launch of the new Stylus Handbook of International Higher Education, I'm delighted to co-author two chapters related to evolving definitions of internationalisation and the internationalisation of research. I also have a short case study on Ireland in the chapter on international student recruitment.

NAFSA's International Educator magazine has just published a short personal essay on how to ask the right questions in our field, even when there are no answers.

And I was delighted to co-author an EAIE Blog on stakeholder disengagement with my good colleagues Marina Casals and Franka van den Hende in Europe.

Soon to join Swinburne University of Technology as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement)

After an extensive international search and recruitment process, Swinburne University of Technology has announced the appointment of Dr Douglas Proctor as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement).

In support of Swinburne’s global ambitions, recently outlined in its Horizon 2025 strategy, Dr Proctor will provide leadership across the university with responsibility for global engagement and the development and deployment of Swinburne’s internationalisation strategy.

"Europe and the Global South" - EAIE Forum magazine editorial, Spring 2021

This issue of Forum shines a spotlight on the longstanding ties between European higher education institutions and the ‘Global South’. Although the Global South is a contested term in itself, it is clear that Europe has been engaging with countries facing development challenges (in various world regions) for decades and that this engagement spans research partnerships, capacity building, student mobility and more.

In compiling this issue, we were keen to enable readers to deepen their understanding of engagement between Europe and the Global South, highlighting successes and challenges related to collaboration and focusing on opportunities for the future. Similarly, we wanted to understand a little more about the state of internationalisation in the various countries considered to be part of the Global South, and how or whether this was shaping the perspectives or priorities of European institutions in working with Southern partners and stakeholders.

"Internationalisation for all" - EAIE Forum magazine (Winter 2021) call for proposals

Forum magazine is now accepting submissions for the 2021 Winter edition on ‘Internationalisation for all’. This issue of the EAIE member magazine will examine the distributed nature of international engagement, framing internationalisation as a whole-of-institution endeavour with multiple nodes of leadership and activity.

Recognising that internationalisation is pervasive and stretches far beyond the international office, this edition of Forum seeks to explore the significant international engagement of faculty, staff and students as actors and champions of internationalisation at multiple levels across an institution.

In doing so, this edition seeks to shine a spotlight on those instances of international engagement which might otherwise remain hidden or go unacknowledged within an institution. In many cases, these forms of internationalisation are harder to capture, as they are driven less by formal strategy than by the individual commitment of staff and students to a global mindset and opportunities for international collaboration.
