New learner-centred definition of internationalisation

Well known to many in Australia, Robert Coelen continues to make his mark in Europe and was recently inaugurated as Lector (Professor University of Applied Sciences) in the Internationalisation of Higher Education at Stenden University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands.

Dr Douglas Proctor has over twenty years’ experience in international education across the higher education, vocational and ELICOS sectors, both as an academic and senior manager.

Douglas returned to Australia from Ireland in July 2021 to take up the role of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement) at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne. Previously he was Director, UCD Global at University College Dublin, Ireland’s Global University.

Douglas holds a PhD in international higher education at the University of Melbourne. In 2018, he co-edited a Routledge book with Dr Laura Rumbley entitled ‘The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education’, which gave primacy to next generation perspectives as well as focusing on dimensions of internationalisation that are known to be under-researched.

Based on his experience and contributions to the sector, Douglas was recognised as a Senior Fellow of the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) in September 2019.
